The pattern defines repetition. A line style combines the pattern with line weight and color and is used by detail, model, or symbolic linework according to context.

Many Revit elements receive line appearance from categories, subcategories, object styles, and view overrides rather than a direct AutoCAD-style entity property.
What Happens When You Import or Link a DWG
CAD Layer Display
Revit exposes imported CAD layers as imported categories that can be controlled in the view. The linked DWG remains CAD content rather than being converted into native Revit line styles automatically.
Imported Line Appearance
Basic dash-gap appearance may be represented, but complex text, SHX shapes, scale behavior, and object-specific results should be treated as compatibility risks.
View-Specific Visibility Controls
A linked CAD file can be hidden, halftoned, or overridden by layer in a view. This makes it useful as a coordination background but does not create reusable native Revit patterns.
Control Imported CAD Lines in Revit
Object Styles
Use imported-object settings for project-level control where appropriate. Confirm whether changes affect all views or only a selected context.
Visibility/Graphics Overrides
Use view-specific settings to control layer visibility, color, weight, or line pattern for coordination and documentation.
Imported Categories
Expand the imported or linked file in the view controls and manage individual CAD layers. Keep layer names meaningful before export from AutoCAD.
What Transfers from AutoCAD to Revit
Basic Line Appearance
Simple linework and recognizable dash-gap representation generally provide the best chance of a usable linked background.
Layer-Based Organization
CAD layer names are valuable because Revit can expose them for imported-category control.
Simple Pattern Representation
A simple pattern may look sufficiently similar for coordination, but test at the intended Revit view scale and print output.
What Does Not Transfer Reliably
Embedded Text
Text inserted by a complex linetype is not equivalent to native Revit annotation. It may be simplified, altered, or lost as semantic text.
SHX Shapes
Custom repeated symbols depend on AutoCAD resources and have no guaranteed one-to-one native Revit equivalent.
Complex LIN Parameters
AutoCAD’s R, U, S, X, and Y behavior is not a native Revit line-pattern parameter set. Recreate critical graphics with Revit-native tools.
Export Revit Linework to DWG
Open the DWG/DXF Export Setup
Create or edit an export setup rather than relying on an unknown default. Coordinate layers, colors, line patterns, units, and text settings.
Map Revit Patterns to DWG Linetypes
Use the Lines mapping controls to associate Revit line patterns with appropriate DWG linetype names.
Load Linetypes from a LIN File
The export setup can reference a LIN file so the desired AutoCAD names are available for mapping. This is an export configuration step, not a general native Revit LIN import.
Configure Export Linetype Scale
Test exported DWGs at the required units and sheet scales. Revit and AutoCAD use different graphic contexts, so numeric equivalence should not be assumed.
Create Equivalent Native Revit Line Patterns
Rebuild essential simple patterns with Revit’s dash, dot, and space segments. For utility text or repeating symbols, use appropriate Revit families, annotations, detail components, filters, or line-based content rather than forcing an AutoCAD complex linetype concept into Revit.
